Tango Your Way Through Buenos Aires

And stay connected while you savour the sights and sounds of Argentina’s lively capital city

For our 20th wedding anniversary, my husband and I have decided to start living our bucket list. Argentina has long been a dream destination, so Buenos Aires, here we come!

One reason Eric and I are excited: we’ve found a simple way to get more enjoyment from our trip, keep expenses down and stay connected with our teenage sons in Vancouver: Roam Like Home™.

Roaming fees can really add up, so we usually turn off our smartphones when travelling – or waste precious vacation time searching for free Wi-Fi. With Roam Like Home, exclusively for Rogers customers on a Share Everything™ plan, we can use our devices (phones and tablet) with the ease and convenience we’re accustomed to at home in Vancouver, for an affordable daily fee, in over 75 countries. For South and Central America, it’s just $10 a day* when roaming in an eligible country, up to 10 days per monthly bill. (To ensure you’re enrolled, just text “travel” to 222 on each device you’ll be using when you travel).

Having Roam Like Home means we won’t think twice about using our phones to find directions, make reservations, surf the Web, use social media or call or text our kids back home. It’s a huge load off our minds – and now we can really enjoy the sights.

Day 1

To get oriented quickly, we join a tour of barrios, or neighbourhoods. Across Buenos Aires, we’re struck by the beautiful and diverse styles of architecture – you’ll find Old World, art deco and Philippe Starck buildings in this vibrant city. In Monserrat, we snap photos of gorgeous churches, including the city’s oldest, Saint Ignatius. At Plaza de Mayo, we admire the pretty-in-pink Casa Rosada, where the Argentine president works. We also tour the massive Teatro Colón, home of world-class opera, ballet and a symphony orchestra.

After the tour, we search out nearby restaurants using TripAdvisor. We discover that we’re near Argentina’s oldest café, Café Tortoni (founded in 1858), so we stop in for iced coffees and smoked tenderloin sandwiches. Of course, we stay for the tango show. We even get selfies with the dancers, which we instantly share on Facebook.

Day 2

After reading about day trips online, Eric and I venture outside the city for an intriguing experience: a fiesta gaucha at a traditional ranch. A scenic bus ride through the countryside gets us to the ranch, where the gauchos (cowboys) turn out to be fabulous, entertaining hosts for us city slickers. We see what rustic life is like, go horseback riding, enjoy folk music and devour a wonderful grilled lunch – Argentinians know their barbecue. I text my sister a photo of myself with Rosita, a lovely and very patient mare. Sarah promptly texts back: “Show me the cowboys!”

At our hotel, tired but happy, we catch up on email and call home to check on the boys (unlimited calls to local and Canadian numbers are part of our Roam Like Home service because we’re on a Share Everything plan). I remind them to eat foods other than pizza.

Day 3

We’re lucky it’s Sunday – the only day to enjoy Feria de San Telmo, the city’s famous antique market. With the area closed to traffic, thousands of tourists and locals swarm the cobblestone streets around Plaza Dorrego, visiting craft stalls and food vendors.

Eric and I find the market using Google Maps (no problem with Roam Like Home). We munch on delicious chorizo sandwiches while watching street performers and musicians. To our delight, we’re invited to join an impromptu tango lesson. After lots of shopping, we wind down at Bar Plaza Dorrego, a charming restaurant that’s been operating for well over a century. And, as the sun sets, we people-watch from the plaza, already talking about what we’ll see on our next visit to Argentina.
