My two boys, ages 8 and 11, were cautiously curious when I proposed a trip to Glasgow (“Where is that?!”). But once we Googled attractions in Scotland’s biggest city, they couldn’t wait to get on the plane.
First stop on our agenda: Glasgow Science Centre, located with help from my smartphone’s GPS. It’s got a planetarium, live shows, an IMAX theatre (Scotland’s biggest screen) and loads of other fun stuff – plus, mercifully, a café where jet-lagged parents can load up on coffee. We spend most of the day there, and not once do I hear “I’m bored!” Both boys are exhausted by day’s end, and they fall asleep at the hotel clutching their gift-shop gizmos. Success!
Over breakfast, we upload yesterday’s best photos to Facebook, download the official VisitScotland Explore App, and Google “Scottish slang” for fun (my younger son’s favourite: “yer bum’s oot the windae!” which means “you’re talking nonsense!”).
We don’t need the hotel’s pricey Wi-Fi – I’m using Roam Like Home™, a great service for Rogers Share Everything™ plan customers. I can use my smartphone like I do at home (including email, Web surfing, and unlimited talk and text) in more than 35 European countries for $10* a day when roaming within an eligible country, hassle-free. Plus, I’m only charged for the first 10 days and Rogers covers the roaming charges after that on my bill! Signing up is simple: text TRAVEL to 222 and you’re set. With Roam Like Home, we can check directions, make reservations and stay in touch with family – it’s all the convenience we’re used to, without the sky-high roaming fees. (When you’re travelling with kids, the fewer things to worry about, the better!)
My kids browse the city app and announce our destination: Riverside Museum and its impressive collection of vintage trains and cars – off we go! Lunch is at Grosvenor Café, which entertains kids with crafts and face painting on weekends (plus we saw good reviews on TripAdvisor). Then it’s back to the hotel for a relaxing evening of goofy YouTube videos, pizza and video chatting with the boys’ dad back home. Quality family time!
On our last day, we visit Glasgow Cathedral, a dramatic, spine-tingling place filled with stained glass and tombs dating back to the 12th century. We also love SEA LIFE Loch Lomond Aquarium and its walk-through shark tank and hands-on rock pool (and we saved 30% by buying tickets online – sweet!). Tired but happy, we get on the train at Balloch station and head back to the hotel. On the way, the boys pull out their Scottish slang, agreeing that Glasgow is “pure dead brilliant” – no translation needed!
