Five ways to take your house-hunting online

A roundup of tech resources to help you find the perfect home

Spring is a season of new beginnings and fresh starts. As such, it’s the perfect time to look for a new place to hang your hat. Whether you’re looking to purchase a micro-condo, a sprawling family residence or a vacation property down south, here are the top five tech tools to help you in your search. Happy house-hunting!

1. Knock.com

This innovative online platform is setting out to revolutionize house-selling. Homeowners interested in pulling up stakes can use the service to get a trade-in price and then locate a new home. Knock then purchases this new home with its own capital, and the homeowner moves into the residence. Meanwhile, Knock pays for repairs on the old home, lists it and sells it. The streamlined process is meant to eliminate a lot of the hassles for sellers – including having to continually vacate a home for potential buyers to tour it.

2. Homesnap Real Estate & Rentals
Free | iOS; Android

Shutterbugs will love this app, which lets you take a photo of any home you’re interested in and instantly get listing details, value estimates, interior photos, property boundaries and open-house information. You can also use the search function to filter homes for school districts. And it includes a built-in private messaging feature.

3. Realtor.com
Free | iOS; Android

This popular app gives you access to home listings, high-res photos, 3D tours, interactive maps, custom filters and extensive property details (such as taxes and local school information). Plus, there are alerts for new listings and price reductions, and the ability to share favoured listings with family and friends.

4. 6 in 1 Real Estate Calculator
$9 | iOS

This iOS app was created with the Canadian market in mind. You can use it to calculate everything from mortgage payments to the income required, the CMHC/GE portion of the purchase, the land-transfer taxes and even rent versus buying comparisons.

5. Opendoor Real Estate & Homes
Free | iOS; Android

If you’re looking for a getaway property in an American snowbird city like Phoenix or Las Vegas, this is the app for you. While on holiday, you can browse hundreds of local homes that are for sale, checking prices, surfing photo galleries and obtaining listing details. If you find a home you like, with a simple click you can get driving directions and obtain a keyless access code to tour the residence. Spur of the moment house-hunting fun, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. No appointments needed.
