Escape to Portland and the Oregon Coast

Stay connected while you explore city delights and the rugged beauty of America's West Coast

For a weeklong summer getaway that combines culture and nature, our family – my husband, our two kids, 10 and 13, and I – are heading west to Portland, Oregon. This charming city has attractions for all ages, and from there it’s an easy drive to the Pacific Ocean.

Fun in the city

We start by exploring Portland’s central neighbourhoods. Finding our way around is easy with Roam Like Home, a roaming service for eligible post-paid Rogers customers. For a daily flat rate of $5*, we can use our smartphones like we do in Canada, whether we’re checking directions, browsing websites, reading reviews, posting to social media, texting or calling. There are no unpredictable roaming fees, and Rogers caps the charges at 10 days per billing cycle.

We use my phone to find Director Park, the spacious plaza in the heart of downtown, and Portland Art Museum, whose impressive collection features Old World masters and contemporary Native American artists. Next, we navigate to Old Town/Chinatown. First stop: the famous Voodoo Doughnut, which the kids are gaga about (top pick: Dirt, a doughnut covered in vanilla frosting and crushed Oreos).

Voodoo is just a few blocks from the tranquil Lan Su Chinese Garden, which features authentic Chinese architecture, a koi pond and a teahouse. After posting photos to Instagram, we head to Ground Kontrol, an incredibly fun arcade with classic video games and pinball machines. It’s geek heaven! We also explore the Pearl District – home of the city-block-sized Powell’s City of Books – and Northwest/Nob Hill, where we visit the grand Pittock Mansion, built in 1914 for an influential family. Everywhere we go, we enjoy the city’s relaxed vibe, green spaces and, for the grown-ups, superb coffee.

We love the vintage roller coasters at Oaks Park and the attractions at Washington Park, just a short distance from downtown: Oregon Zoo, Portland Children’s Museum and Rose Garden Children’s Park. Doing as the locals do, we use Portland’s bike-share program, BIKETOWN, to take a spin around Tom McCall Waterfront Park (I download the BIKETOWN app to buy day passes – easy!).

Roam Like Home makes it simple to find information and stay connected. Each evening, we share photos and videos with friends and family back home, make restaurant reservations and plan our walking routes for the next day – no problem.

Road trip to the Oregon Coast

Time to hit the road! For the last few days of our adventure, we book a car online and drive along the Coast Highway. U.S. Route 101 stretches 584 km along Oregon’s western edge, from the Columbia River in the north to the border of California in the south.

Using maps on my phone, we explore the lively North Coast area, including picturesque towns Astoria, Cannon Beach (famous for Haystack Rock), Tillamook and Rockaway Beach. It’s magnificent here – we hike, swim and eat to our hearts’ content.

On our final day, we use Roam Like Home to check in to our flight, book an airport limo and plan one last expedition into the city. Portland and the Oregon Coast have provided the perfect family holiday, and we can’t wait to come back.
