The Nexus 6P: Unadulterated Android

Google’s latest phablet is tailor-made for Android acolytes

Manufactured by Chinese tech giant Huawei, Google’s follow-up to the Nexus 6 is 100% Android.

It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, with automatic updating to ensure you’re always among the first to access new OS features. It’s also exquisitely engineered, with a premium metal case, luxe screen, blazing-fast CPU and high-performance camera.

If you’re a Google fan, this is your new phone.

Maximum Marshmallow

The Nexus 6P is about making the most of Android 6.0 (a.k.a. Marshmallow). It takes advantage of the OS’s best features – like a power-saving tweak called Doze, which detects when the phone hasn’t been touched for a while and then reduces background processes, and new Chrome custom tabs that permit Google’s browser to work inside other apps. Most importantly, the Nexus 6P will always be one of the first phones to get new Marshmallow updates.

Beauty Minus the Beast

Functionality always takes priority in Google devices, but an attractive form never hurts. The Nexus 6P’s elegant metal chassis is made from aeronautic-grade anodized aluminum, with smooth diamond chamfers (transitional edges) ringing its glass front. The sculpted back has contours in all the right places, fitting perfectly into your hand. It looks and feels like money.

Imaging, Android Style

The Nexus 6P’s 12.3-MP rear camera boasts bigger pixels (1.55 micrometres) than your average cellphone camera. Bigger pixels result in more information and less noise, which in turn leads to warm, rich, beautiful pictures. Add an improved Android photography app and support for 4K-video capture, and you’ve got a covet-worthy camera.

Reduced Size for Better Handling

At nearly six inches, the Nexus 6 was a gorgeous but mammoth mobile that verged on unwieldy, especially for users with smaller hands. The Nexus 6P is scaled down just a tad to 5.7 inches, putting it squarely in the Goldilocks zone – not too big, not too small – for most people. The screen-size reduction also resulted in a thinner, narrower and noticeably lighter handset, weighing in at just 178 grams.
