New faces we can’t wait to see in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Are the latest additions to the Star Wars universe friends or foes?

The Force is back! And just in time for the holidays, too. Fans of the beloved intergalactic franchise will be treated to Star Wars: The Last Jedi – the sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – in a matter of days (Dec. 15).

While we’re looking forward to watching our fan favourites – including the final scenes of our much-cherished princess Leia Organa (RIP, Carrie Fisher!) – lightsaber up the big screen, we’re also thrilled to see what these new faces will bring to the table.

(Spoiler alert! The following text contains possible spoilers that may become canon in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the Star Wars universe.)

Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo

She’s impeccably dressed and can pull off a mauve-coloured ’do like no other, but more important, she’s a boss in the new flick. There’s no denying that Laura Dern’s Holdo exerts plenty of authority, especially over her Resistance colleagues and subordinates like pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). While Poe is fiercely loyal to General Leia Organa, his relationship with Holdo is strained, as their two personalities are likely to clash. What’s more: Holdo’s loyalties might be put into question. Since Dern’s character might come across as morally ambiguous, there’s always a chance she could be an agent for the First Order.

Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico

As a background player and maintenance woman for the Resistance, actress Kelly Marie Tran recently described her character as confident and loyal. “She’s not a superhero. She’s just kind of an everyday person, and that’s something special about her,” Tran told Entertainment Weekly. Rumour has it that Tran’s Tico will team up with Finn (John Boyega) and help him recover from the lightsaber injury he sustained in the previous film.

Benicio Del Toro as “DJ”

Even amid numerous fan theories, we’re still in the dark about Benicio Del Toro’s presence in The Last Jedi. He’s currently listed under the moniker “DJ,” and director Rian Johnson has told media outlets that del Toro’s character will have an important role in the fight between the First Order and the Resistance. And that’s pretty much all he’s willing to reveal. However, behind-the-scenes footage has shown DJ working undercover with Finn and Tico. But much like with Dern’s character, there’s no guarantee that del Toro’s DJ isn’t in cahoots with the dark side.

Justin Theroux as “An Expert Slicer”

While not an essential character in the series, The Leftovers star Justin Theroux is set to make a brief appearance as an “expert slicer.” In the Star Wars cosmos, a slicer is essentially a professional computer hacker. Dressed to the nines in a white tuxedo, Theroux’s character allegedly appears on a mysterious casino planet where del Toro’s character is also rumoured to be residing.

Tom Hardy, Prince William and Prince Harry as Stormtroopers (?!)

It wouldn’t be an epic Star Wars film without several fun cameos. Along with Theroux, Tom Hardy is also set to make an appearance – like Daniel Craig in The Force Awakens – as a Stormtrooper who gets a bit friendly with Finn. As for princes William and Harry, it remains to be seen whether their scenes will be cut from the final version of the film. However, it’s been confirmed that the royal brothers did make an appearance on the set. In an interview with BBC Radio4, John Boyega had this to say: “I think they took the scene out… [But] they came on set. They were there. I’m sick of hiding it. I think it was leaked, anyway. There were images. Every time I get asked, I have to dodge it. I’m tired of dodging it.”

Despair not, Finn. You won’t have to dodge any juicy details or spoilers for much longer. Fans will know everything soon enough. Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theatres on December 15.
