They may not be as sweet and wholesome as your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, but the four street-level superheroes of Marvel’s newest Netflix-original miniseries, The Defenders, are devoted to protecting average everyday civilians, especially while The Avengers are off fighting an intergalactic war.

The Defenders brings together the likes of a daytime-lawyer and nighttime-ninja (Matt Murdock, a.k.a Daredevil), a super-strong private investigator (Jessica Jones), a bulletproof crime fighter (Luke Cage) and a martial arts master with a glowing hand (Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist). Although they’re a seemingly unconventional team with clashing personalities, the quartet must unite to protect New York City from evil forces currently at work.

Before you gear up to binge-watch all eight episodes on Netflix, here’s what you can expect from Marvel’s second-most popular superhero group.

(Spoiler alert! The following text contains possible spoilers that may become canon in The Defenders, the Marvel Streaming Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.)

1. Easter-egg extravaganza

While it’s highly unlikely that any of our beloved Defenders will appear in the Marvel Cinematic juggernaut that is Avengers: Infinity War, we can certainly expect plenty of references to The Avengers and a certain interplanetary dispute that’s currently brewing. As in previous Netflix installments, such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones, there will (probably) be further nods to men with iron suits (Iron Man) and magic hammers (Thor). Maybe even another wink at that “big green guy” (Hulk).

2. Ellen Ripley is the Big Bad

Though very little has been revealed about her overall presence in the series, Alien star Sigourney Weaver is set to play the primary antagonist to our Defenders. Her character Alexandra is there to create chaos through her ties with the ninja-infused crime organization The Hand and a malevolent paramilitary group called IGH. Meanwhile, fans have speculated that “Alexandra” is actually a pseudonym for such Marvel Comics villains as the demonic Mephisto or former head of Hydra and skilled assassin Viper.

3. Yet another hallway fight

What’s a Netflix-Marvel alliance without an epic hallway fight scene? ICYMI: the official trailer has already teased at least one action-packed take of our heroes punching their way out of trouble within a narrow corridor.

4. Guest stars galore

It’s not just the Defenders who are teaming up. We’ll also see their respective friends, family members and colleagues meet, greet and very likely clash in the miniseries. Supporting cast from all four superhero shows are set to appear in The Defenders, including Rosario Dawson, Rachael Taylor, Jessica Henwick and Deborah Ann Woll. But we’re particularly jazzed about the reappearance of Elodie Yung as the enchanting Elektra Natchios. In classic comic-book style, Yung’s Natchios has found a magical loophole out of her death, which took place at the end of Daredevil, Season Two. While we’ve previously seen her as an ally to Matt Murdock, the new miniseries depicts the riveting mercenary as a living weapon used against the Defenders by Alexandra.

5. Post-credits scene

Without fail, Marvel has always carried on its long-standing tradition of memorable post-credits scenes. And this should be no different. When you’re done streaming your way through the new series, stay tuned for what Marvel has in store next. Our money’s on a snippet from the next phase of the Marvel-Netflix lineup, The Punisher, starring Daredevil-alum Jon Bernthal as ultra-lethal vigilante Frank Castle.

All eight episodes of The Defenders will be released on Netflix on August 18.
